The Oxford dictionary defines the following:
The original "Culpeper Minutemen" (Culpeper, VA) were organized on July 17, 1775 and fought for the patriot side in the first year of the American Revolution. Although the terms militia and minutemen are sometimes used interchangeably today, in the 18th century there was a decided difference between the two. Militia were men in arms formed to protect their towns from foreign invasion and ravages of war. Minutemen were a small hand-picked elite force which were required to be highly mobile and able to assemble quickly. Minutemen were selected from militia muster rolls by their commanding officers. They were most often chosen for their enthusiasm, reliability, and physical strength. Usually about one quarter of the militia served as Minutemen, performing additional duties as such.
In October 1775, the minutemen from Culpeper county were sent to Hampton in response to British ships attempting to land. The riflemen were able to effectively shoot the men manning the ships cannons, and the fleet eventually sailed away. The Culpeper militia next participated in the Battle of Great Bridge in December 1775. The battle was a complete American victory. There were accounts of the battle that suggested the British were unnerved by the reputation of the frontiersmen.
With great respect and admiration for these American patriots, who fought against tyranny and oppression to champion the virtues of freedom and independence, we are so-named in their honor; ourselves not founded in Culpeper but, rather, in California.
In trust with that same unifying spirit which makes up the heart and soul of “America”…
Calpeper® Panoptic Martial Arts & Survival Training is open to every American citizen and U.S. Veteran regardless of race, gender, creed, religion and socio-economic or political persuasion.
It is worth noting, however, that while individual Calpeper® members come from various backgrounds and walks-of-life, each with their own views and ideas; the official position of Calpeper® – as an organization – shall at all times remain religiously agnostic and politically independent; and, in all cases concerning such matters, shall defer always to the wisdom and principles of our nation’s Founding Fathers.
The United States is comprised of many types of people, from many types of backgrounds. The strength of our nation can be attributed to our great “melting pot”. This wonderful variety – gathered together as one nation, and as one “people” – is not only the distinct cause of our greatness, but it was a "revolutionary" concept at its inception more than 240 years ago. It is therefore in this fashion that we approach our study of martial arts. By “seeing the whole” of what martial arts is, and bringing it together into “one view”, We become better martial artists & safeguards of freedom. By practicing basic "bushcraft" and survival skills, We become more secure in our ability to care for ourselves & our families. By connecting our present to our past, and learning from the wisdom of those who came before us, We become better Americans & Patriots.
Physical Fitness Training, First-Aid, Bushcraft & Survival Readiness, Primitive Weapons (pre-rifle), Modern Weapons (post-rifle) and Basic H2H Combat Techniques are all part of this new, comprehensive and "panoptic" training system; and at Calpeper® you have access to it ALL.
Born on Christmas night at Union Hospital in the Bronx (NYC), Franke was bitten by the acting bug at a very early age. While attending P.S. 33 and 83 he was cast in several school productions and won a variety of awards for his writing. By the time he reached High School, Franke was not only an honor student, but also studied martial arts (Karate) and was on the school track team. It was around that time when he and a friend formed a heavy metal band called Kruciform. With Franke as the lead guitarist, Kruciform played at various clubs throughout the New York City area. With their unique brand of heavy metal, Kruciform attained some local success during their 5 years together. But when contract negotiations with a record label broke down, Franke decided to change directions and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While stationed at Naval Air Station Miramar, in San Diego California, Franke served his entire 4 years as an Aircraft Weapons Systems Specialist, and was a member of Miramar's Base Police Auxiliary Security Force. In his free time, Franke was a member of the Armed Forces Aero Club where he earned his license as an FAA Certified Private Pilot. After his enlistment, Franke remained in San Diego, resumed his study of martial arts (Kung Fu), earned his degree in Robotics, and began a career in Computers. Always being one to challenge himself, Franke began to study acting and eventually produced, directed and performed in a number of independent & commercial projects.
After decades of witnessing the tragedies and horrors that continue to plague our world (both natural & man-made), Franke began to notice a frightening lack of "disaster & self-defense preparedness" among the general population. It was from this realization - coupled with a deep sense of patriotism - that Franke was compelled to design a new, comprehensive and "panoptic" martial arts & survival training system, which he named:
